move to a new server (different IP)

Post by sindrehi »

Hi,

We have to move to a new server with anoter IP. Article: ME020444 describes how to do this.

How do I set up the old server to forward all mail to the new server in the periode where the IP adresse is changed?
The article names smart hosting, but on my server (smtp properties) smart hosting is forward all outgoing mail. But I have to forward all incoming mail.
Is there a way to do this?

Regards,

Sindre

What server is the old server running? The process should be the same set up smart hosting on the remote server to forward all mail to your new MailEnable server.

Hi,

In the smtp properties there is smart host properties. Here it says all outbound email will be sent to the following smtp server.

But for the old server to forward all mail it should forward all incoming mail not outgoing mail. Or do I missunderstand something?

The concept would be where ever your users are logging into at that time then the messages should be forwarded to this server.

So if you have your DNS ready to send email to the old server and you are setting up MailEnable on the new server then you would configure the smart host option on your new server to direct all mail to your old server.

If however you are ready to have all your users login to MailEnable but your DNS is still pointing to your old server then you would smart host all mail over to the new MailEnable server.

As for inbound and outbound I don’t think that matters a smart host will simply forward all mail to another remote downstream location.

It is worth noting that this can be done on a domain level in the ME Admin MMC under the domain properties.
