Permissions problem migrating from Win2008 to Win2016

Post by sagelike » Thu Oct 10, 2019 8:19 pm

Hi there,

We've been trying to migrate to a new mail server (Win 2008 R2 to Win 2016 Enterprise) but keep running into problems with permissions on the new server.

Here's the problem:

The issue we were having is that when copying files over a network share, the original ACL's are copied by SID and not by username/principle. Thus if a folder is copied over which has IME_GROUP_STORE, the SID of the group is transferred over but does not match the SID of the IME_GROUP_STORE on the new server.

Our question is: What is the recommended approach to transfer data from one server to another while preserving the windows user and groups?

We made one attempt and also bought some ME support and thought we had it working but still ran into permissions problems. Accounts simply didn't work properly.

We did a similar migration 5 years ago going from Win 2003 to Win2008 and didn't have these issues so there must be something about Win2016 that makes migration problematic with regards to permissions.

Any advice or insights that anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
G

You could try something like Robocopy to transfer the files and select NOT to transfer security.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/robocopy

Thanks Brett. We are using robocopy and tried that and it didn't work. We'd also still have to set permissions for the all of the mail directories so the net results is the same.

Bump, anyone?

If we can't get these permissions issues sorted out, we're basically stuck on Win2008 and Mailenable doesn't have any documentation on permissions when migrating.

There is also the option of running MEInstaller.exe from the Bin folder and using the first and second options to reset file permissions. See if that works for you.
