Expiration of auto-banned IP addresses.

Post by fbmaxwell »

MailEnable needs the ability to set a time limit on bans of IP addresses (SMTP Properties --> Security tab --> Connection Dropping).

As it stands now, the feature denies the IP address in perpetuity if the number of failed commands/addresses is reached. So let's say you set yours to 10. I compose an e-mail to 11 non-existent addresses in your domain and send it. Your server auto-bans that IP address of the server my message came through, possibly a legitimate outgoing mail server at gmail, Yahoo!, AOL, etc.

I know that the documentation says to look through the list, but that's time-consuming and most admins can't look at an IP address and tell whether it is a real mail server, a home cable modem user, or a spam blasting service.\

We need the ability to set it for some period or hours (1, 12, 24, etc.) and have the ban expire.

Fred Maxwell
