How to prevent email data being deleted when mailboxes are removed

SUMMARY

You may wish to keep the email and configuration data for a mailbox even if it is deleted. This article describes an option that will stop this data being deleted when a mailbox is deleted in the administration program or via the MailEnable programming API.

DETAIL

To enable this option, create the following registry key and value. You will need to restart the services and close/open any application that is using the API for the change to take effect. When a mailbox is now deleted, it will not exist in the configuration, but the directories for the email data will remain. It is possible to restore the mailbox by creating a new mailbox within the administration program, as it will recognise that the email data already exists, and will prompt you as to whether to keep it.

For 32bit Windows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mail Enable\Mail Enable\Providers\Store]
"Remove Mailbox From Store"=dword:00000000

For 64bit Windows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mail Enable\Mail Enable\Providers\Store]
"Remove Mailbox From Store"=dword:00000000
