New messages not showing up in outlook till close/open

You have to close and open back up outlook to get all new messages to show up. Also, just yesterday I had 6 messages show up as new after restarting outlook. 5 of them i read already and even responded to, the 1 was completely absent till I closed outlook and brought it back up again.
