[SOLVED] ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
[SOLVED] ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
I'm evaluating EAS with the actual MailEnable Enterprise version 6.5.3 in the moment.
With my tests I found the following issue:
Whenever creating a new contact, calendar appointment or note with german umlauts on the iPhone, the entry will be displayed correctly on the iPhone, but within WebMail all umlauts of this entries will be replaced with "?".
If I create entries within WebMail everything shows up correctly either in WebMail and on the iPhone.
Also if I change existing entries on the iPhone, umlauts will be replaced.
I've tried different settings of the characters sets, but without success.
Does anyone have an idea how to resolve this issue.
Your help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
This sounds like a localization problem where the fields are not being converted into the correct charset. Are you providing eas through IIS or through the HTTPmail service? We will run tests to confirm and if we can reproduce, I will post the fix here.

Re: ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
Addition to my posting:
Same effects may be seen with the MAPI Client for Outlook (2010 - German), that I've installed a few minutes ago.
Editing a contact entry on the iPhone via EAS corrupts the contact data also in Outlook.
There's also another interessting effect in Outlook.
Outlook doesn't seem to accurately update contact information, after editing on the iPhone.
In the contacts overview one can see that account details have changed, if there are umlauts in the name. Since the umlauts will be replaced with ?.
Opening the contact, name and address details seem to shop up correctly, but if you click on the name or address button to edit the according fields, you'll see the ? that replaces the umlauts...
Contacts that are generated or edited within Outlook or WebMail show up correctly in WebMail, on the iPhone and in Outlook.
So it seems for me this is a iPhone related issue...

Christian

Re: ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
Thanks for your patience. The problem with extended characters has been found and fixed.
I have posted a hotfix containing the binaries here. It should ideally be installed on 6.52 or 6.53. In doing so, you will need to:
Alternatively, I rolled them up (although not yet released as 6.54 into these kits):
http://www.mailenable.com/Premium654.EXE
http://www.mailenable.com/Enterprise654.EXE

- stop all MailEnable services
kill all instances of metray.exe
netstop w3svc
kill all mmc.exe apps (event log and mailenable management console)
kill any residual w3wp processes

Re: ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
Hi Andrew,
thanks for the Hotfix, but unfortunately the issue still exists, but with different characters.
It's no longer the "?" that replaces the umlauts, but "".
regards
Christian
Edit: I just reviewed my posting and saw that the "new" symbol that replaces the umlauts isn't shown up correctly in the forum.
The symbol is a "quad"...

Re: ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
Thanks, I have an additional fix - MEIISHandler_20120508.zip
That file needs to be replaced in the BIN/NETPROTOCOL/Bin Folder
There is no need to restart services.
Those kits mentioned will also be updated shortly.
I accidently forgot to post the actual zip in my original post: http://www.mailenable.com/hotfix/MEEAS_20120508.zip (but you will only need the additional file I provided)

Hi Andrew,
I've installed the additional fix.
With my Outlook and iPhones tests it works correctly now.
No more changes and problems with the umlauts

Re: ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
Hi Andrew,
unfortunately I have an issue again:-(
With your hotfixes everything worked fine with ActiveSync in evaluation mode.
Today I bought the AUP Renewal and the 20 licenses ActiveSync package.
After activation I've made some tests, and found again but new issue with german umlauts.
Creating a calender entry in webmail or Outlook 2010 with german umlauts works fine.
Everything is shown up correctly, also on the iPhone.
As long as you open and change existing entries within WebMail or Outlook everything's fine.
If an entry is changed on the iPhone the lines with umlauts will be "destroyed" within Outlook.
The entry is still correct in WebMail.
Open this entry in webmail without changing anything and click on save, everything's ok again in Outlook.
Example:
Original Text: Test with äöü
Text after changing on iPhone in Outlook: =?UTF-8?Q?Test with =C3=A4=C3=B6=C3=BC?=
It doesn't matter which part of the entry is changed.
Do you have an idea what coul cause this behaviour?

Christian

Re: ActiveSync - Issue with german umlauts
I tried to reproduce this issue but was unable to.
Here is what I did:
1. Created appointment on Server with umlauts (used subject/decription)
2. updated the appointment on the phone/ipad (added notes and some chars on the end of the appointment)
3. Viewed the appointment in WebMail client (I also tried the Outlook/MAPI client, but I am using a newer version)
I also tried the same with contacts and making various changes in either direction - but did not have issues.
Perhaps the server software has been updated or is a different version.
Has it been upgraded since the patch/fix was applied?
It is possible that I am using a later mapi client than you are using - I will shortly post a link to my version to ensure thats not the issue.
Could you please post the contents of a corrupt cal file in this thread. It can be found under the mailroot/mailbox/calendar/*.cal
Easiest way is to edit one and sorty by modified date.

The mapi client I used in my test is this:
http://www.mailenable.com/mesetupx64.exe (for outlook 64)
http://www.mailenable.com/mesetup.exe (for outlook 32)
They will be released as 1.43 later this week.
Update: They have been released

Hi Andrew,
thanks for the new MAPI Client, but this didn't help to solve this issue.
I've deleted the mail account in Outlook, deinstalled my MAPI client (1.42) and installed it completely new.
Absolutely the same effects.
