Which blackists are reliable?

Post by inCharge.co.uk »

I've switched on MailEnable 'Reverse DNS blacklisting' and found some fine tuning to be necessary. Can anyone advise?

Have you had problems using the following blacklists?
e.g. legitimate users on retail webmail or broadband being blocked.

- DSBL - List
- Open Relay Database.
- SpamCop
- Spamhaus

I found these blacklists to be unusable:
- "OsiruSoft" - because it bans hotmail, gmail etc
- "DSBL - Multihop" - because was blocking my legitimate customers on broadband.

Have also disabled "DSBL - Unconfirmed" because it's...unconfirmed.

Also, are there any more reliable blacklists that I haven't mentioned above?

Cheers
Julian

Open Relay Database, SpamCop and Spamhaus, seem to be pretty reliable. Here's a list of other Blacklists if you want to look into others.

Blacklisting is not absolute. You'll always have a fair amount of false positives. If you want an awesome spam solution look into ASSP over at sourceforge. It's incredible... and free.

Thanks for the useful info.

Based on what I've seen I'll stick with those lists & monitor the number of false positives.

Also change the Spamhaus domain to sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org, the XBL is a very good list too.
