How to stop postmaster from bouncing to outsiders?

Post by DaveTheWave » Fri Jan 10, 2020 7:58 pm

When an outsider from the internet attempts to send to a ME mailbox that doesn't exist yet, the outsider receives this bounce:

MailEnable: Message could not be delivered to some recipients.
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Recipient: [SMTP:nonexistantuser@mydomain.com]
Reason: Remote SMTP Server Returned: 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or not local.

This is inherently bad for spammers since now they know my ME mailserver exists and will continue to address book it.

I realize we can disable the mailbox postmaster, but then legit users of mydomain.com won't benefit from it.

Hi,

Try and set the SMTP setting for NDRs to "Only generate NDRs for senders who authenticate".
