Re: 503 This mail server requires authentication
Hi,
When you are trying to relay email, where the recipient is not configured on your server, you need to authenticate (this is the default configuration). So the email client needs to send a username/password to send email to a remote server. In your example the sender has not authenticated and if blocked from sending email to anyone except addresses configured on the server. Normally in your email client it will have the configuration option for your SMTP settings to enter username/password.

Re: 503 This mail server requires authentication
I am wondering about authentication when using mailenable standard only as a list connector, not for pop/SMTP e-mail.
What authentication settings for relay and SMTP should I use so that the authentication checks against the list members to let them post and receive, but blocks anyone not meeting a name@domain (e.g. fred@gmail.com) in the list - or do I misunderstand something here. I am getting the 503 error on e-mails to the list.
Thank you

Re: 503 This mail server requires authentication
Hi,
If your list contains external addresses then there is no local username/password they can authenticate with. If you have set the list option to be "Only list members can post to this list" it uses the senders email address to check. If all the members are local mailboxes you could set the SMTP service to require authentication for sending, but generally a list works by just accepting emails to it and duplicating for all members, similar as if it was a mailbox.
