Newbie question - Some servers rejecting my email

Post by x-ray »

I can receive just fine... all perfect there.
I can send to Hotmail
I cannot send to some other addresses (like a County office e-mail address).

Is it their server that is rejecting me? Can I overcome this?

Thanks.

Hi,

The first thing i suggest is to look at your log files as they indicate where the message is trying to get delivered to and outlines any errors.

This Kb article explains how to troubleshoot SMTP connectivity and how to analyse log files: http://www.mailenable.com/kb/viewarticl ... 020170.htm

Not much info (I think)

Here's a snippet from the log file:

07/07/04 17:22:47 ME-I0123: Domain [cdcprogram.org] has MX list [mx1.prserv.net,mx2.prserv.net]

07/07/04 17:22:47 ME-I0026: [9BBF427A569B4D2A91F16C7A4BA4B0.MAI] Sending message

07/07/04 17:23:29 ME-E0038: [9BBF427A569B4D2A91F16C7A4BA4B0.MAI] Communications Error: Socket connection to mx2.prserv.net failed. The host was either not contactable or it rejected your connection.

07/07/04 17:23:29 ME-E0059: [9BBF427A569B4D2A91F16C7A4BA4B0.MAI] Message Delivery Failure. Attempt (1): Could not find mail server for domain (cdcprogram.org). The remote mail server could not be contacted at this time. Message has been requeued.

Of interest was the socket connection failed to both the mx and backup mx. What's that about?

Thanks.

When ever I receive this error it is generally due to the fact that the server that my system is attempting to deliver to does not have a valid mx record listed with their DNS server.

This causes a deliver failure notice to show up in your log files and a none delivery report sent to the user attempting to send the email.

But after doing a lookup on their domain and getting glue for their MX records, it would be my guess that one of two things occurred.

1. They had their mail server down for an unknown reason causing connectivity issues.(small business do as the please with up time)
2. You had a DNS look up error, if this is the case I would test your mail servers DNS lookup ability to see if in fact there was an error and were it may have occurred.

If you feel that everything is copasetic on your end you can always go to http://www.dnsreport.com and look up their MX record to see if in fact one exists.

Just my 2¢

You can also try clearing your DNS server cache.

By the way

It seems as if hotmail is rejecting me now too. My IP address appears on a few blacklists. This happened while I had relay open for a few hours and got spammers sending stuff through me I guess.

Could this be it? Any way to get off the blacklist?

Thanks again

the only way to get off blacklists is not being an open relay.
Most of the RBL's have no means to tell them you are not an open relay anymore. They usually re-test in certain intervals.

Go to ordb.org and issue a test on your domain and see if it comes up clean now...
