SMTP Outbound Queue not sending

Post by TheStapler »

I have 85 messages in my outbound queue that have been there for a few days, and I cannot send them. I have right-clicked and send all now, and it still does not send.

The email is not generating any delivery failures, or anything? I am stumped.

What version of MailEnable are you using? Have you installed the 10030 hotfix? Are you running Plesk?

v2.37 (fresh install of 2000 server) and all patches/hotfixes are up to date. It was a standalone download and install of MailEnable, so PLESK is not installed.

You do know that the 10030 hotfix is a MailEnable SMTP hotfix? Available from our web site hotfix page?

What do the logs say when the messages are trying to be sent? The debug logs should be showing errors of the message send failures.

Yes, the hotfix has been applied already, and as for the log file, what am I looking for? I can send you the log files, as I am not sure where or what I should be looking for.

I get a lot of these though:

05/16/07 12:48:19 ME-E0125: Connection Refused: (**our pop server ip**) was refused because the inbound connection limit has been reached.

OK... I looked into it a little further, I had changed my SMTP setting back to my ISP, so anyway, I changed it back to the Mail Enable's SMTP, and sent out an email.

I have followed the logs (I have EVERY log logging) and it does not show anything about that email I tried. I know it was accepted, as it is in the outgoing queue with the status of 'UNSENT'. I clicked on it, and went to 'SEND NOW', and it changed the time, but that is all that happend.

I checked the logs again, and still... no trace of that email.

What is going on? Am I looking at the right log files? (the SMTP logs)

I need to get this working so that we can move to this new server, and shut down our old one.

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Using 2.37 you can right-click on the file in the SMTP Outgoing queue and select View Send History from the popup menu. That will give you some indication of what is happening to the mail.

Cheers,
Brett

there is no log generated, as the file is never being sent.

I just dont get it.

There is no reason for this? I have everythign set up (at least I am 99% positive), and it is accepting incoming, and everything.... as soon as I try to send out, nothing happens.

I just dont get it.

why can't i just send my email?!

If you can see the email in the outgoing queue in the MMC then there should be entries in the SMTP Activity log for ME at least receiving the email from your computer (check for your internal IP address).

After receiving there should be entries in the MTA activity log moving the mail from the inbound to the outbound queue.

Once in the outgoing queue there should be more entries for SMTP at least trying to contact the recipient's email server.

Why not post sections from the SMTP Activity/Debug and MTA Activity/Debug logs covering a period of about 5 minutes around the time you send the mail. At least that way someone might be able to spot something.

Cheers,
Brett

I have looked at trying that... and there is no record of the email going through the server... which is REALLY weird. I will try it again, and post results.

I have all the logs logging, so i will check EVERY log file that there is.

Ok... i hope this helps show something.

I did a test email from outlook, and it went through perfectly, so it will send email locally, but as soon as i tried to send to an external address (gmail.com) it sits and waits.

Here is the log:

It looks as though your SMTP port 25 might be blocked on the outbound. yuo can use the telnet command to find out whether you can get out of the server.

I have checked via telnet both ports 25 and 110 *just to be sure*.

From the server, everything is fine (out to mail.mailenable.com, and locally), then from another server on a different conenction to the problem server, and it was fine also.

So, it does not seem like a blocked port.

Have you checked that days SMTP Activity/Debug logs for any reference to 2B9049423C7B4C2F91D214C5B9FCAE2B.MAI ?

The only other thing I can think of is to check your DNS settings in ME. If ME can't find external mail servers it can't send the mail externally which is the symptom you are experiencing.

Cheers,
Brett

-- bump --

Still have this sissue, and as far as I know, the dns enteries are right, as it is using the same values that our old mail server is using, and it was working/running.

I am not sure what else to do here? Help?
