Imap with Entourage and Apple Mail.App

Post by netblue » Mon Mar 31, 2008 12:55 pm

I have set up several Mac's with Entourage 2008 and Apple's Mail.App (Leopard) using the IMAP protocol. I am running MailEnable Pro 3.02 on Windows Server 2K3.

The issue I have is with user folders created within an IMAP account. In the Mail.App application folders other than the INBOX will "lock up" and continuosly send the FETCH MAIL command. In Entourage, the application itself will crash with an error. Also, in Mail.App, when sending messages the sent mail folder will lock up immediately. The lock up can be resolved by deleting the index.xml file on the server, however, this is only a temp fix and lasts only a few emails. Entourage also has issues displaying folders correctly. Both email clients also exhibit the problem of incorrectly reporting the amount of messages in the folder as was previously posted on this forum.

After discussion with both Apple support and Microsoft support, we were prompted to set up and Apple Mac.Mail (IMAP) account in both applications which runs smoothly with no problems. This leads us to believe there to be an issue with MailEnable's IMAP support.

Running the MailEnable Diagnostics produces all "Green" pass indicators. All POP3 email clients work as expected.

Thanks in advance for any advice that someone has to offer.

Would be a good time to upgrade to the latest version 3.14 and see if this helps as I have tested with an Apple client a couple of weeks ago and it worked for me.

I installed the 3.14 version on April 23rd, but I still have problems with it.

For example, here is a problem a client has brought to my attention today.

The client uses Webmail and Entourage 2008 to access their mail. Today, when logging into webmail, as the client does each night at home, 43 new messages had arrived in the inbox from various times over the past week. Some messages were several days old.

I am looking at the inbox now as I write this, and a new message came in posted 8/1/2008, over 2 weeks ago.

I do not have the problem with any clients running Entourage 2008 on an Exchange server. I imagine that is a well tested connection.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Ok, I installed the latest build available on the website yesterday. We still have the same issues with Apple .Mail application, but things with Entourage 2008 have improved somewhat. SO far there have been no message delays, but subfolders will dissappear after creation.

Hi on the provision of this thread and some support tickets that were submitted we have undergone some major testing and changes to the IMAP service. The new version of MailEnable available on the MailEnable web site contains the new IMAP changes so please again upgrade and then let us know how you go. I have been using and testing again with the Apple Mail client for a couple of weeks and while I find it quite slow in some things (which may be due to it needing a service pack) I have found that the results have been good for the new IMAP service with the client.

Mac Problems with IMAP

Post by Rooey123 » Thu Aug 21, 2008 9:21 pm

Still the same issue with Mac Mail. SLOW. It basically freezes the computer.

All the latest upgrades are done from MailEnable, but MAC Mail will connect temporarily, and if you drag some folders around, it will die.

It takes a good minute or more to connect. We have tried this on 4 MACs, all running 10.5 or better, across the country (US), with all experiencing the same problems.

The servers are clustered win 2k8 with 64 bit, 16GB of Ram, dual quad core...so they can handle the load.

HELP!!

Interesting note after 10 hours on this.

Mac Mail 2.1.4 for OS 10.4 works fine on IMAP.

The latest version of Mac Mail 3.4 on 10.5.3 does not work at all. It's next to useless.

Any ideas what to do?

I think we have found something in the new version of Apple we just updated today ourselves. Have found in the ME logs that there was a timeout in the new Apple client on a command we were sending, this was in the logs;

08/22/08 00:08:54 Notification thread terminated.
08/22/08 00:08:57 Socket=[556] Command=[STATUS] Host=[192.168.2.16] Status=[10060].
08/22/08 00:08:57 ME-EXXXX: Warning: Failed to access file (D:\Program Files\Mail Enable\POSTOFFICES\test.com\MAILROOT\ben\_activity.tab). This most likely means that the last client connection terminated prematurely. Error = 2.

It looks like something is being done differently by the client we have made a change to our service to accommodate it and I am testing it now. So far the speed increase has been quite dramatic as the timeout is not occurring I will post a link to this thread when we have tested completely by the end of today.

I've noticed with my Apple Mail.app program that it doesn't seem to "receive" the new email unless I change folders. For example, I start my Apple Mail.app program, read, delete or move all of the messages in the account and leave it running. Now I go out to GMail, send myself an email to my MailEnable account, but the email doesn't show up in my inbox on Apple Mail.app, even after 45 minutes, even though the MailEnable server has the message (I verify this on the server). Even if I click on the "Get New Mail" button, no new email is displayed in the Inbox.

If I change to another folder in Mail.app, then suddenly the messages show up in the Inbox. Closing Mail.app, then reopening, re-sending a message from Gmail still exhibits the same issue. I've noticed this problem only since upgrading to ME 3.52 and then applying the latest hotfix (8/20/08).

Maybe related?

Any apple users make sure that you are using the latest versions of MailEnable and then let us know if any of these problems still exist. As we are currently not seeing any problems here.
