POP3 password check

Post by Brett Rowbotham »

How do I check the password that a mailbox is using to try to login to the POP3 service ?

We have an automated email response system which logs in successfully 103 times from midnight to 8:36 AM then, the 104th time it tries at 8:41 AM, there is an "Invalid name/password combination" error in the log. If I unlock the mailbox (and reset the password to the original, next time I will try without resetting the password) the login is okay again. The computer running the response system was possibly rebooted at around that time and I am trying to figure out what password it was using when it could not log in so I can trace the problem area.

Cheers,
Brett

Hi,

Follow the steps below on how to add/enable a POP registry key that will log passwords within the POP debug log file:

1. Open windows regedit and navigate to the following registry branch:
32Bit - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mail Enable\Mail Enable\Services\POP
64Bit - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mail Enable\Mail Enable\Services\POP
2. Create a DWORD key named: Log Passwords
3. Set the decimal value for the key to 1
4. Close regedit and restart the POP service for changes to take affect.
