Filtering not working

Post by Goose » Sun Nov 21, 2004 5:50 pm

Hi all,
I'm just testing out the pro version as I want Anti Virus and SPAM filtering as well as Web Mail etc etc.

I have found that filtering doesn't work and I have seen a message on the forums saying that it was because of a lack of license?

If it isn't the lack of license, anyone got an idea on what to check. Everything "looks" fine...

If it is the license, how do I get a temporary one to test this functionality out?

Hi,

If the evaluation period expires then it will disable the filtering option.

If it isn't the license then i suggest you check that MTA filtering is enabled under the MTA>Antivirus/Filters options.

Evaluation doesn't appear to have expired and the filtering under MTA is enabled.

Hmmm...

I have filters working for content (Words in the body and headers), but when testing for file attachments this weekend I noticed that the filter for blocking attachments failed to work.

Under MTA properties, should I be doing anything with the Enable pickup event option? I have also been trying other filters and do not know what was there by default.

Hi,

If you have the MTA filtering enabled in the MTA properties then this will turn on the filtering, the pick up event is for use with other third party applications that can be called to do specific tasks.

How are you configuring the filter? Have you checked the MTA logs for any indication if the filtering is working?

I suggest you go over the latest manual of Mailenable Professional v1.52 on the section about "System message filtering" on how to configure the filtering option.

I have the filter enabled and it has managed to catch 3 emails in the last two days. This is not really a plus as it has let through dozens that have a filter rule set.

I have two filters setup, one for subject keywords and one for body keywords. I did it this way so I could manage the lists outside of the ME UI but I can't find the files or registry settings used so it probably isn't worth it.

To take a simple example I have the filter ro*ex in the subject line. Last night I received emails with rolex, Rolex and Ro1ex in the subject line, it missed all of them.

At the same time it caught one with viagra in the subject so it makes no sense. The MTA filter log file doesn't have enough information in it to say too much, is there a debug mode showing it processing the rules?

Thanks,

Goose

Ok, there is something very wrong with the filtering engine.

As far as I can tell the wild card option doesn't work as it is failing on all messages that would be caught by a wild card.

I am also getting emails filtered that do not appear to match any word in the filter list.

There also seems to be some confusion about what constitutes a "word". if I put "live cam" as a word it seems to take it as two words of 'live' and 'cam'. Is this expected behaviour?

I am very interested in getting this working. If I can help by providing some input to the process please let me know. As I said, a debug build would be very useful.

As my testing is taking longer than expected I guess I will come to the end of the trial period soon. How long is it? The diagnostic reports says 17 days so far on the evaluation.

Thanks,

Goose

The filtering of SPAM by content is available in the Professional version and was available from version 1.5 onwards. Maybe you need to upgrade.

Give me an example of what you are searching on in reagrds to you wild card I have tested here and they are working fine.

Two words? Are you talking about the word template file or are you entering the words into the criteria screen? It should treat every entry as a string and search accordingly.

Could you send exact details on what you are trying to do?

The logs are one way to diagnose what is happening here, and the next version the logs will be improved. The new version should be up by the end of this week. You have 90 days for evaluation so you should be fine.
