SMTP problem/ Need some help

Post by kami » Fri Feb 17, 2006 7:52 am

HI,
I am having an odd problem which I hope someone from mailenable here can help me out.

For some reason every single mail sent to any hotmail account are not being delivered.
It only does that with hotmail.
Below is what I saw in my smtp log file for an email which for test I tried to send it to two address one in yahoo and the other in hotmail and as you can see the one sent to hotmail was not sent with error message;
**The host was either not contactable or it rejected your connection.**

Messages sent to any other mail server works fine except hotmail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Check the activity logs they may have more info on this maybe a link. But it looks like Hotmail are rejecting you.

I'm having similar problems, these problems seem to happen sometimes only, is hotmail maybe graylisting my server?

I just set the delivery retry delays like MailEnable-Ben Suggested in another Post lets see how that goes. any other suggestions?

First Retry - 5
Second Retry - 15
Third Retry - 25
Subsequent - 240
Failed Lifetime - 48

Don’t send delivery delays until - 30

I had an instance last week that may give insight to the way hotmail does things.

I was testing hotmail sending from a customers server to test I was using the telnet command. I did not have a hotmail account readily available so I sent a test email to peter@hotmail.com using telnet.

5 Minutes after this the server was blocked and could not send email to hotmail it was being rejected by the hotmail servers. 1 hour after this I was unblocked and everything was fine again this time I sent to a legitimate account (one that I knew) and did not have the problem as before.

I think that the peter@hotmail.com address was either a honeypot address or my blank message was received by the email account and then placed into his junk email box or the message was deemed to be spam as it was incorrectly formatted and the IP placed on a temporary blacklist. There is no way to tell what happened here unless I contact Hotmail and even then who knows. This sort of silent greylisting/blacklisting happens with all large ISPs so be careful what you are sending or redirecting to their servers.
