ListServ Performances

Post by eneubert »

What are the best practices to improving the performance of the listserv? My client is looking at trying to get up to 20 emails per second out the virtual door. I run my own DNS servers, so caching DNS is one option, but what else would significanly improve the throughput on the outbound SMTP. The server is a dedicated listserv server.

Thanks.

ps. no, It's not SPAM

It really depends on where your bottlenecks are if the messages are going out OK and are not building up in the queues then you can look at things like SQL storage, no logging, faster DISK IO among other things. If the bottleneck is in the SMTP outbound queue where the messages are processed through the queues and list server but wating to be picked up by the SMTP service and sent out then there is not much you can do except bring the DNS servers locally, and fiddle with the Retry Counts for failed messages, the SMTP outbound threads and making sure you have the best bandwidth and environment speed possible. Obviously slowness can at some stages of the queue cycle be a problem depending on how you handle incorrect email addresses and outbound errors etc also.

Here is a little bit more on this:
