Indexing service keeps stopping

Post by dcol »

The Indexing service keeps stopping. I tried to delete the 'VerificationState.xml' file then restart the indexing service, but after a few seconds, the file and the service stops again.

When I look at the MEMIS log it has this error (xxx@xxx.com is replacing the actual users email)
2021-03-02 10:40:26,478 [20] ERROR - Failed to update index for xxx@xxx.com: The process cannot access the file 'N:\Mail Enable\CONFIG\MailboxSearchIndexing\VerificationState.xml' because it is being used by another process..

What can I do about this?

UPDATE: I tried deleting the file, clearing the log, and restarting the service. And after 5 times the indexing service seems to be holding.
What it looks like to me is the 'VerificationState.xml' file is being used while the service is trying to access the next index update. If there are too many updates in the queue, then the service stops. This is a bug if that is what is happening.

It's been 24 hours and the Indexing service has remained running after I restarted it 5 times clearing the file each time.

Index service has been flakey for a while:

I just leave it stopped for now.

I agree with flaky. Seems whenever there is too much queued up, it starts failing. And this is a recent issue. I don't remember this happening with earlier versions.

Updated to 10,33

Indexing service ran, after restart, for a little over a minute before shutting down again.

Can you download this and make it run every 15 mins on the server??

And report back.

I updated to 10.33. Haven't seen this issue since I cleared out the queue. You need to restart the service deleting the VerificationState.xml file every time until it clears the queue. Could be dozens of times depending on how big the queue is. I think it all started when I requested too many re-indexes at once

Finally got the service working correctly by deleting the stored index files for the user most often referred near the time the crash occurred.

Must have been corrupt data as the service now runs as designed.
