Connection Dropping not function

[scngan]

i set the connection dropping to 3 under my SMTP->Security->Connection Dropping but somehow, from my SMTP Activity log, i still see that those incorrect recipients transaction still keep going. I'm on Enterprise Premium 9.83
Any idea ?

You can't prevent them from trying an address, but you can limit the number of attempts before you drop the connection. This is done under the SMTP options in the admin program. Select the "Security" tab in the SMTP options and set the "Connection Dropping" dropping number. You can also enable the option to block the IP address if they hit this limit, but you probably only want do this if the limit is more than 5 or 10, to stop valid users from being blocked.

Blocking the IP address is pointless when a spammer is harvesting. When They find active users, the damage is done and they start spamming with another IP.

What we need is a way to drop the connection once a 550 response is detected from a non-local account before they find active accounts. I get 200-300 of these harvesting spammers an hour and I have yet to find a way to stop them. Here is a sample of what I see over and over again all with different IP's

Yes, once the connection limit is reached the IP is added, but the connection is not dropped as seen in my log below. I have the failed commands set to '2'

My suggestion is when the connection limit is reached, also drop the connection before they find active users. If this is the way ME is suppose to work, it doesn't but should.

There is no way any anonymous sender should be able to do this.

As I mentioned in the other thread, zen.spamhaus.org caught all of these harvesters/spammers. Although my sample size was small (only saw 6 harvesting attempts), it may well be worth a try. I haven't seen any further hits in the past week and I guess they gave up.

Just be careful you are not using a public DNS resolver like Cloudflare/Google/Quad9 with zen. Spamhaus won't reply to those.

I have been trying SMTP>Advanced SMTP>External Script>Configure
I was successful using ME_MAIL() to block TLD's, but it doesn't seem as though function ME_RCPT() works at all. I have tried different commands in there and it just either ignores or gives script errors with anything I do. And yes, I have all the Inbound script options checked and restarted SMTP.

I am getting conflicting answers about this problem. One support person says the 550 response errors does not work with Connection Dropping, yet the IP is logged then ignoring the ME_RPCT() function, Here is the problem. ME SHOULD drop the connection if the limit is reached.

The Connection Dropping option will drop connections if there are too many invalid commands. This includes rejected/failed recipients. So "550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or not local." error would contribute to the connection being dropped.

As you can see from the posted logs. The connection is not dropped. I would expect a quit command after so many invalid recipients yet the connection goes to completion of all the RCPT commands..
