Receiving mail stops silently - no bounces

Post by einarsen » Wed Jun 06, 2007 8:54 pm

I've seen this problem twice now (last time was 3+ months ago) and it's pretty disturbing. Emails sent to the server seem to be accepted but never get delivered.

For example, the SMTP log shows:
06/06/07 13:34:23 ME-I0101: [1180] Local Delivery: Address ([SMTP:brad@hks.ca]) is local.
06/06/07 13:34:25 ME-I0149: [1180] 5264E53280E240A69947A09BCB156395.MAI was received successfully and delivery thread was initiated
06/06/07 13:34:26 ME-E0068: (sw) socket [932] error. Return Value: (10054)
06/06/07 13:34:26 ME-I0074: [932] (Debug) end of conversation

The POP log shows:
06/06/07 13:35:17 POPS 472 64.34.27.153 +OK Welcome to MailEnable POP3 Server 39 0
06/06/07 13:35:17 POPS 472 64.34.27.153 USER USER brad@hks.ca +OK 0 18
06/06/07 13:35:17 POPS 472 64.34.27.153 PASS PASS * +OK 0 15
06/06/07 13:35:17 POPS 472 64.34.27.153 STAT STAT +OK 0 0 0 6
06/06/07 13:35:17 POPS 472 64.34.27.153 QUIT QUIT +OK Goodbye 0 6

These errors (ME-E0068: (sw) socket [924] error. Return Value: (10054)) have been reported before on the forums re: SMTP just "stopping".

Anyone have any ideas what might be happening? I'm at a loss and the mails don't get bounced so no one knows their email didn't get delivered...

Thanks,
Brad Einarsen

Hi

check your MTA debug log.. is there anything in there??

Theres been a recent hotfix related to this kind of thing, have you applied that out of interest?

thanks

We're running a very recent version of Enterprise (2.37) so we *probably* have the hotfix already. However, where do they keep such things? I could try it...

I remember looking into the MTA logs but seeing nothing of interest but I missed the DEBUG logs... thanks for the reminder. Yes, it's full of these:

06/06/07 13:35:18 Processing file AEBEF41377C34ECBB1CFF8EBE0FC4A8A.MAI from queue SMTP
06/06/07 13:35:19 ME-MTA-INFO: Plugin deleted message AEBEF41377C34ECBB1CFF8EBE0FC4A8A.MAI.

...until it gets to the reboot then it has these (which are probably more normal):

06/06/07 13:38:12 Processing file 462895E9C2964D99B46AAB69A50FF0DF.MAI from queue SMTP
06/06/07 13:38:12 ME-MTA-ROUTE [462895E9C2964D99B46AAB69A50FF0DF.MAI] from [SMTP] Connector queued to [SF] Connector as [CA2BAED8004B4D638C1CCB4B31A19EBB.MAI]

So, do I deduce that a filter has been running rampant!?!

I use Baysean spam filtering and Fprot antivirus filtering.

I bet it's the filters doing something evil...

thats exactly the problem we had and I worked with mailenable to catch it and provide them with an advanced debug log.. which they then came out with the hotfix

this can be found here:

http://www.mailenable.com/hotfix/default.asp

Its the most recent one.. where it states "This exception may then lead to the MTA deleting messages"

Good luck

Hotfix - Spam Filter

Post by einarsen » Thu Jun 07, 2007 3:04 pm

Steve,

Thanks for the pointer, that is probably the problem since I use the spam filter to prefix [SPAM] to the subject line.

Thanks for the tip!!!
