Flood Attack. MailEnable too little resources.

Post by isaak »

Today we experienced a DoS attack at the SMTP inbound level.
The only way we could protect us from this attack was to add the IP addresses into the blacklist.
Just imagine, adding every IP used by the attacker (even using wildcards)...

MailEnable should provide more resources to handle this type of attacks.
To be able to add a host into a blacklist (not only IPs), for example. The attack came from different IPs that belong to the same network/host.
This would help a lot! And of course, limit the IPs to a maximum number of concurrent connections allowed.
So far, SMTP, POP, IMAP, etc, can be set with a limited "maximum number of concurrent connections".
But this is in a global scale. There should be a different setting, allowing administrators to set the maximum concurrent connections allowed per IP/Hosts.

And many other common resources to help us reduce this type of attacks.

MXScan (www.mxuptiume.com) can do this.

How can mxscan can do that?
I only see the same kind of settings ME already includes for restrictions.

Nothing else or special for the kind of attack I'm mentioning.
Besides, I believe ME should take care of this through MEs itself, without the need of third parties.

Im just saying...

MXScan can filter inbound IPs, inbound domains, backscatter, etc. Although it would be great if ME had all you needed for spam filtering, it may not ever happen. Depending no how many actual users you have, you can try the Lite version of MXScan until you have things set the way you like it. I tried another spam filter before MXScan. It was very difficult to set up. You almost had to know computer code to turn settings on and off and wasn't good with many domains (as we host). MXScan does a much better job and is easier to use.

Im sorry for my ignorance.
Its just that I dont find listed the feature that you are describing (not even in PRO version).
Can you please be so kind to point them out for me, please?

And also, I know the difference between LITE and PRO version is the PRO has more features included.
But about the administration, are they exactly the same or are they different?
