Bouncebacks Not Reaching Me

I've got a strange situation on my new servers. I just moved both servers to a new hosting facility last month. Since then, I'm not getting bouncebacks if I mail to an invalid address. If I deliberately mail to a xyxyxxy at my bellaonline.com server, I see the record of it coming into the debug and activity log. Both know, properly, that it's not a valid address. But my home system never receives a bounceback message about it.

Similarly, if I have the system send a message out via ASP to an external address with an issue, I never see the bounceback of that invalid address come back through the sending bellaonline email address.

I examined the two checkboxes in the SMTP settings that seem to have to do with non deliverables and neither one is checked. The do not generate NDRs and the Only generate NDRs for authenticating senders.

Any other thoughts on why I don't get responses back in these situations where there should be a bounce message of some sort? It makes it hard for me to troubleshoot issues, if I'm never seeing the bounces.

I did even check my local outlook mail and I don't see any rules in there which could be suddenly trapping the messages.

To expand a bit, email destined for me all ends up at my LisaShea server and I retrieve that mail directly via a POP connection. So it is all MailEnable servers moving that information to me.

Hi,

If MailEnable is returning the 550 mailbox unavailable error during the SMTP transaction then the server sending the message is responsible in generating the bounce back message to the sender and not the MailEnable server.

OK I probably didn't explain this clearly enough. Here's a test.

From my home system I send out a test email via POP through my LisaShea server. That email is destined to reach my BellaOnline server.

If I send to a valid BellaOnline address, the email goes through. I get it on the other end.

If I deliberately send to an invalid BellaOnline address, I see the invalid error in the BellaOnline SMTP logs. So BellaOnline's server is getting it and knows it is invalid.

But I never hear back, on my home machine, that there was an issue. The email simply goes into a black hole.

I have the same issue if I send to a list I have defined on the LisaShea server. If a member on that list is bouncing, I never see the bounce results. I don't know they're bouncing.

Hi,

The sending server is responsible for sending the bounce message to the sender address with the error indicating the address does not exist (I.e: the LisaShea server). Is the sending server a MailEnable server also? If so what do you see within the SMTP log files on that server when you send to the invalid address? Also the POP service is not responsible for sending/receiving messages. The SMTP service is.

I'm talking with AOL about this issue and should have it resolved soon. But my concern is that I never get any bounceback from my LisaShea server warning me the mail bounced. I get nothing at all. So it goes into a black hole.

I looked in my SMTP general settings and I did have a default email in there set to POSTMASTER@minervawebworks.com ... just in case it had gotten screwed up during the migration I reset that to webmaster@minervawebworks.com, saved it, and bounced all the queues. I still get an error from the bounceback mail process. Here's a sample failure after my resetting activities. So this is my server trying to send to me (at my personal charter.net email address) news of that bounceback. For some reason it seems the MAIL FROM address is blank. That should be the webmaster@minervawebworks.com right?

OK one more test. I sent mail "from" lisa@lisashea.com to my test list (which has an AOL member on it) so that the bounceback stayed on the same server. That did work. Note that it's using 127.0.0.1 instead of the external IP address with the ?? which the other send created. So maybe it's that IP address and ?? that are the problem? I even tried setting the outbound IP to the one specific IP address rather than default, to see if that would help, but it didn't. Here is the log when the bounceback returned to lisa@lisashea.com which does work. The from is still empty - should it be?
