Calendar Sharing Functionality?
Hi all
This is my first experience with MailEnable and my first post on these boards so apologies in advance for any silly questions.
We have a client who has asked for a new email server (which is where MailEnable comes in!) and calendar functionality for their users. Obviously MailEnable EE offers calendar functionality so I have installed it on a test machine for evaluation purposes. However, I cannot seem to find the following features:
1. Calendar Sharing.
Users can view other users' calendars.
2. Appointment Reminders,
MailEnable can send an email to, or otherwise alert, a user to remind him/her of anupcoming appointment.
Is there any way of achieving the above with MailEnable or am I going to have to use an alternative application (I don't see any value in custom-coding one as there must be dedicated apps out there) for the calendar requirements?
Thanks in advance.
roadie.

Correct, the current versions of MailEnable do not have the features you are requesting in regards to shared calendaring. We are in the process of creating an MAPI service that will handle this but the completion of this is a while off yet.
I am not aware of any third party apps that solely handle shared calendars - cheers and good luck.

If they don't mind about having a linux server take a look at this one: http://www.scalix.com. This is the better alternative to exchange I've ever seen and it's free up to 25 users.
Exchange...nothing better. I think you couldn't be more wrong. Administration is a pain, setup and migration is a nightmare. I agree with Anlan about Scalix. It's not simple to install as it is picky about packages and Linux distributions but there are ways around it. We moved to it and are dropping MailEnable slowly because it lacks good groupware support. Scalix gives us a lot of options it's free for 25 users and you can upgrade with a license key only to more user accounts if needed.
There is also CommuniGate Pro for linux, which works like Exchange, but simpler to maintain. I think Microsoft just over complicated things with their product. As for MailEnable, well they got stuck in the same spot for too long. I wish they could have focused on MAPI first and start working on other features later. I think they missed what their customers really wanted.

Definitely Scalix
I second the suggestion to check out Scalix. I'm thinking about setting up a Linux box just to use it!
Community edition of scalix is free. The only costs you might face are based on the number of Premium Users (the ones you want to connect through the MAPI Connector for outlook): up to 25 there are no fees. For subsequent users the cost is about $50 per user.
Community edition lacks some functionality : just for example you can't have public folders with their own email address.

There is a way. You can share a single Calendar among multiple MailEnable users by using symbolic directory links if your hard drive is formatted with NTFS. Simply use the JUNCTION command to point all of the user's individual Calendar directories (under their mailboxes) to a single Calendar directory.
For example, the following would make User 1, 2 and 3 all share the same calender under a Group 1 directory.

Code: Select all
JUNCTION \postoffice\domain\user1\calendar \shared\domain\group1\calendar
JUNCTION \postoffice\domain\user2\calendar \shared\domain\group1\calendar
JUNCTION \postoffice\domain\user3\calendar \shared\domain\group1\calendar

If it is for a small number of uses, there are a number of third party programs that add appointment making by being an addon to outlook and sending the requests using an email.

Enterprise Edition V3 does have calendar sharing. Essentialy a user can share the calendar out to everyone or a discrete list of users. When they share the calendar out, you can stipulate the access available. You can also share folders, tasks, messages and contacts in a like manner.
The demo account at http://www.mailenable.com/demo shows this as being activated.
