A New MTA Filter

Post by MartynK » Sun Nov 30, 2003 12:30 pm

Over the last little while I have been developing a MTA Pickup routine. I have had it running on my machine now for over a month without any problems (that I can see).

The basic functionality is as follows.

1. Spam filtering along the lines of SNIMTA.
2. Attachment Filtering.
3. Black lists.
4. White lists.
5. Send & Receive Stats (Per User).
6. Message Trace.
7. Some remote admin.
8. Message forwarding with basic rules.

The filtering allows for email to be marked, held and deleted.
Stats are held on a per user basis for day, month and year counts.

If anyone wants to give it a go you can find out more and get a copy at http://www.publicplanet.com/mefilter

Looks like a great app and a great tool for MailEnable, but I can't get it to work. I installed it as per the instructions on the website... created the directory tree as instructed and directed my mailenable MTA to the .exe file. After I restarted the MTA, nothing happens. I'm still getting spam mail and the copying that I setup is not working. Any suggestions?

Can you see if the filter is even starting ?

The first thing is does it read the MEFilter.Cfg file. It will then start logging, is there are log file in the Log directory ?

If you have not got this then we need to see if the process is even being called. Has the MTA debug logs got any errors while trying to start the process ?

Not sure how many are using this, but I am and I think it's excellent, lots of control over how it works and more addon's to the program still coming... Give it a try...

Is anybody else having trouble getting this to work. I installed everything per the website instructions.... configured the config files... placed the .exe in the MTA pickup.... restarted the MTA and nothing. When I look in the activity logs or debug logs, it's not even loading the filter. Here is a small copy of my debug:

Any suggestions?? I would really like to get this working. I tried the other "NoseyBoss" pickup event from MailEnable, but I'm getting too much junk and it's tough to weed through the messages that I really need to track. This would work perfectly if I could get it working.

Thanks

What I suggest you do first of all is just run MEFilter.exe from the command line in the MEFilter directory to see if a log file is created. This will tell if you have all the required things (and dll's) setup for the program to run.

But looking at the log file, it seems as if ME is not even calling the MEFilter program, not sure why.

A few questions.
What OS and version of ME are you using ?
Have you setup the directory structure exactly as directed ?
What changes have you made to your .cfg file ?

I'm running Windows 2003 Server with the latest version of MailEnable. The directory structure is setup exactly as it is in the documentation on the website. I haven't made any changes... just using the defaults for now.

As in my last post, does the program when run standalone and create a log file ?

We need to know if the program will even start without ME calling it.

With 2003 you should have all of the required .dlls and the like

I think I've got it working... I had to quote the command line in the MTA pickup event. I can't see if it's started in the MTA event log, but I can see activity in the MEFIlter Logs. I'll update in the morning with details on the progress.

it works, you just have to massage the system a little to make it work. The only problem I've got now is with the message copying. When I turn it on, I get 15 or 20 copies of the same message. It's too much of a pain in the ass, so I turned it off until I can figure out why it's doing that. Any ideas?

The only reason I can think that 'dkrauss' is getting a runtime error is that no parameters are being passed on the command line.

As for 'Big_Eye's problem of message copying, I will need to see the message copy config file. I have not seen this problem as I am copying messages without any issue.

I would also like to know what needed a "Massage" to get it working. As I don't know, have not been told of any issues, can you let me know what they are ?

Thanks

Martyn

errors

Post by dkrauss » Tue Dec 30, 2003 1:40 pm

Yes, that was it. It works fine now from within ME. Note to others, remember when editing the cfg files, notepad has a tendency to add a .txt extention!

I AM, however, getting these errors in the log file:

Error While Writing EMail Stats File
Error While Processing EMail Stats (ErrPos: 6)

I have the EmailStats folder created, but no folders under it. Your directory tree structure picture seems to indicate there should be other folders. Am i missing something?
