Hi, just got to email for the first time in a few days, but if you are running NT you must run the install routine as by default NT does not have all of the required supporting .DLL's and OCX's the the program uses. All the installer does is ensure that a few things line MS Messaging and some common VB controls and runtime files are installed.

I am going to be on hols for a week, so will not be able to answer much after Saturday.

NT 4.0 Server Installs

Post by SteveGDavis » Fri Jan 23, 2004 4:49 am

If you have an NT 4 Server, be very careful. I installed the software contained in the zip file, I was asked about updating some files. Once I rebooted, I was unable to start my server and had to reinstall the OS.

Thank goodness my important files were on a different drive than my OS.

I seem to have the MailFilter program working now.. just need to do some fine tuning.

I would like to know what "Fine Tuning" you have had to do, can you let me know ?

Also if you look at the contents of the install .cab file using winzip, you will be able to see what files are being installed. The reason some of your system files may have been classed "out of date" is because the install package was created on a Windows XP machine. Normally the only reason the package would need to be run is on an NT machine as by default the supporting files used by MEFilter and MEConsole are only installed on W2K machines onwards.

I to would like to know what you have done to get it to run on NT. I have been trying every thing I can think of with no success. So if you see this please let us all know. Thanks :?

When MEFilter runs I am also getting this in the log file and it seems it is not running properly. I have tried to quote the command line...

18:47:41 - The Message Command File Is Missing
18:47:43 - The Message Command File Is Missing
18:51:41 - The Message Command File Is Missing
19:00:06 - The Message Command File Is Missing

"C:\Program Files\Mail Enable\MEFilter\MEFilter.exe"

That doesn't seem to work... Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The error message "The Message Command File Is Missing" means that MEFilter cannot read the ME message command file from the directory. Check to see where you have specified that ME is installed in the MEFilter.Cfg file.

I checked and everything seems to be ok...any thoughts? I have the MEFiter installed to the following directory, and it appears that the config file reflects that...

C:\Program Files\Mail Enable\MEFilter\MEFilter.exe

Well there must be something wrong with the setup, send me a copy of your MEFilter.Cfg file to mefilter@publicplanet.com

Can you try running MEFilter from the command line ?

You will need to stop your MTA, create a new message so that it appears in the inbound queue and then call MEFilter.exe passing the filename of the message and the connector type as parameters.

Let me know what happens.

Yes...

The Stats do NOT show in the MEFilter Control console!!! :(

Is there a fix for that? :?:

Here is my Installation process:
- Copied all the files in \MEFilter under the \Menable\ directory
- Edited the config file
- changed the MTA to point to the mefilter.exe
- restarted the MTA

It seems to be catching the SPAM, the trace is working, the stats are being generated... however in the MEFilter control console... they don't show.

Here is a section of the log:
10:39:10 - Message Attachment Count: 0
10:39:11 - Number Of Spam Phrases Loaded: 982
10:39:11 - Creating Stats Directory: C:\MEnable\MEFilter\EMailStats\xxxxx.com
10:39:11 - No Stats File Exists: C:\MEnable\MEFilter\EMailStats\xxxxx.com\tom.sts
10:39:11 - Processing Has Completed
Although the sub-directory is created, and tom.sts DOES exist ?!!

thanks for your effort. I was using SNIMTA, but I think this is much better approach and solution.
