secondary mx - redundancy

Post by hostfactory.ch »

dear forum

we would like to have a secondary mx-server for redundancy. as i can see in the followming article this should be easy possible:
https://www.mailenable.com/kb/content/a ... D=ME020459

quote "This will mean that if the primary mail server is offline, that the secondary backup MX will accept the e-mail on behalf of the primary.

To do this, configure the secondary MX mail server with all the domains to host, and use the smart host option for each domain, or in the SMTP service properties so that it is directed to the primary MX mail server. This way, if the primary goes offline, then the secondary will accept the mail, and queue it until the primary server is back online."

in the smtp-properties -> 'smart host' i can set up the origin smtp-server: http://pubs.hostfactory.ch/201609151334 ... 0e7ae2.png as discribed in the kb-article.

i wonder a little bit about the description "all outbound email....". (?)
actually should this manage the incoming-mails and queue it till the primary is online again.

however, it is not working. the mails are filling the postoffice, but no 'forwarding / sending' happens to the primary node.

do understand something wrong and if not: how can i find the problem?

best regards
marco

Hi,

No that is not the correct smart host you need to configure. Disable the SMTP smart host and configure each domain to smart host under the domain properties.

Hi,

The reason is because the mailbox exists locally on the secondary MX server and will be delivering the messages locally since they exist locally. You need to remove the mailboxes from secondary MX server and only configure the domain to smart host back to the primary.

Slightly off topic but I've been curious about this for a long time. Does a second MX ME server for redundancy require any additional licensing?

hi webshaun

I would say this should be possible with the free ME-version aswell?
