Blocking China (spam)
Blocking China (spam)
According to http://www.spamhaus.org China is the world’s 2.th most spamming country, properly because of it’s lack of law enforcement (on this issue).
One can ask oneself – why not block the whole country? Do I ever receive a non-spam message from China? It not than here is a free service that does just that: http://countries.nerd.dk
Insert the following in your “Reverse DNS blacklisting†(SMTP properties)
DNS path: Zone lookup
Zone: cn.countries.nerd.dk.
Record type to check for: Address (A)
By the way it is just a country-list of IPs – why not have the same country-blocking function in the next version of MailEnable?

This is easy - either add cn-kr.blackholes.us as a DNS blacklist or install ISC Bind DNS server and add the zone files from http://www.blackholes.us/
I block from about 6 countries so I copied all the zones into a single zone and run it as a single blacklist entry.

Or use firewall
I was going to use nerd.dk but it didn't work, (maybe them going offline is why:)
Anyway, I realized that it would save a bit of traffic and CPU time to simply block those countries at the firewall. There are many GeoIP lists out there or you can go straight to ARIN or APNIC but thats a bit more work.
Anyway, my logs showed allot of spam from China and from Tiawan and considering none of my sites do allot of business in those countries I just drop all traffic from them. Yup, cut my spam done about 70% or more.
Since I have done this and installed spamAssassin spam has slowed to a trickle.

Re: Blocking China (spam)
Well, blocking the whole country is a bit of a problem right? I mean all of those are just IP’s and I don’t know how we can black all the IP’s. People are now using proxy servers to post spam. And also there are a number of software like safe IP, which can be used to post these spam messages.

Although this is now an ancient thread, there is a way to block e-mail from entire countries. It's a DNS blacklist by http://spameatingmonkey.com/geobl/index.html
Let's say that you wanted to block e-mail from China. This is what you would use for your Zone:
bcn.geobl.spameatingmonkey.net
The b means "block list follows"
So now you want to also block e-mail from Mexico:
bcn_mx.geobl.spameatingmonkey.net
Okay, and now let's just block everything from South America, too:
bsouth-america_cn_mx.geobl.spameatingmonkey.net
Cool, huh?
The full list of 'countries' that GeoBL can identify:
If you would like more aggressive blocking then you may block by continent. The continent codes are: africa, antarctica, asia, europe, north-america, oceania, south-america.
Now for the really cool part:
Suppose you want a pie-chart that shows where all of your connections come from. You can get that, too, by signing up for a code to include in each query. Let's say yours was 1234567890
So now your Zone looks like:
bsouth-america_cn_mx.1234567890.geobl.spameatingmonkey.net
Now, you can go to the web site and see a pie chart distribution of connections to your mail server!

Replying to bump this up for others to take advantage of and to say thanks for the info! Even if it not used to block countries the pie chart it provides is awesome info!fbmaxwell wrote:Although this is now an ancient thread, there is a way to block e-mail from entire countries. Re: Blocking China (spam)
Hi ,
New to Mailenable.
we got MailEnable 10 Professional ,we get tons of Spam email , lets say 66k Email during the weekend.
I am interested in Blocking the whole countries , can anyone please suggest how to do it with little extra explanation or refer any documents?
Now , we are in 2020 , these posts are very old , so do we have any better way to block the spam email?
