Hi Ben,
Came into work this morning, the last week or so every morning I'm sending a quick email to my hotmail account and if I don't receive it, I check the mail server... Same problem message "The socket connection to the remote host failed. The host was either not contactable or it rejected your connection." checked the logs and nothing indicating a problem in SMTP log, debug log gives me this message "Error (14): Could not resolve MX list for domain [hotmail.com]" and the same message as above. Theres not a lot of mail going through our server, also checked spam lists, not listed and we have RDNS. I stop/restart the server and all mail sends as normal. Also this isn't just with the yahoo, aol or hotmail, this is with every domain.. except local.
Seems like the same problem for a lot of us here.
Baz..

Here is somethign from my log:
12/02/05 14:53:19 SMTP-OU 640098E81BCA46EAA4697844F065F2F3.MAI 492 200.221.4.129 MAIL MAIL FROM:<jboyd@orisplc.com> SIZE=78658 250 Ok 42 8
12/02/05 14:53:19 SMTP-OU 640098E81BCA46EAA4697844F065F2F3.MAI 492 200.221.4.129 RCPT RCPT TO:<jameslandmann@uol.com.br> 450 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname, [71.39.80.9] 36 67

Why can't it find my host name? This user says 4 out of 5 emails he sends fail.
Here is my DNS entries for this hosted domain:
(same as parent folder) HOST (A) 71.39.80.9
adlweb1 HOST (A) 71.39.80.9
mail CNAME adlweb1.orisplc.com
etc
I put in teh empty HOST name so people can just type orisplc.com and they will get directed to the IP so my host header checking will work. Is this breaking something?
Lannie
I noticed a lot of the SMTP stuff shows my server at adlsolutions.net but the domain in question is a hosted one called orisplc.com. SHouldn't mailenable do all communication via the name orisplc.com?

I searched the yahoo users groups and this is a problem with the yahoo servers you may want to look into this further or find a way to contact yahoo with this issue. Especially if the message is ultimately failing to send. Here is the SMTP logs for the delay item.

Not quite true every problem in this thread is different, yours looks very much like connection issues because of your network connection or DNS settings/servers. Your MX record lookup is failing most likely like you say to every domain lookup, thats where I would start looking for resolution to your problem.Came into work this morning, the last week or so every morning I'm sending a quick email to my hotmail account and if I don't receive it, I check the mail server... Same problem message "The socket connection to the remote host failed. I have found further information on the yahoo problem after looking at some logs today I found that a user was able to send to yahoo most of the time but one mailbox was returning an error;
Resources temporarily unavailable. Please try again later [#4.16.5]
This message kept getting retried and the same error occurred.
So I did a telnet to the same account and received the following;
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ehlo there
220 mta244.mail.mud.yahoo.com ESMTP YSmtp service ready
250-mta244.mail.mud.yahoo.com
250-8BITMIME
250-SIZE 31981568
250 PIPELINING
mail from:<>
250 null sender <> ok
rcpt to:<test@yahoo.com>
250 recipient <test@yahoo.com> ok
data
354 go ahead
asdl;f;alsdjf
asd;lfj;kasdf
sdalkfj;asdf
.
quit
451 mta244.mail.mud.yahoo.com Resources temporarily unavailable. Please try again later [#4.16.5].
221 mta244.mail.mud.yahoo.com
Connection to host lost.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So as you can see the problem is with this particular yahoo account, have no ideas why yet and will keep an eye out for why. If I was to take a guess it does look as though there is a silent grey listing feature being used possibly on accounts where they have received too many messages in a short amount of time.

where specifically to check
I see SMTP activity and SMTP debug, but the most either of those say, is either server could not be contacted, or it rejected.
How do you tell what happened?

Contact the remote servers admin, find out why you are rejected or why their server is down.

as usual ...
mailEnable is most likely not the problem.
I tried the http://dnsstuff.com and tried to send to those addresses which had been being rejected.
it failed from that location as well.
that made me suspect, that the problem was not localized to my server or ME.
as a further precaution to making sure the mail is going through:
Do I need to set up a PTR for every domain on the server, or just for the outbound binding IP address I pick?
(blacklists look at the outbound bind ip, yeah?)
