BUG: Temporary error results in bad mail on first attempt

Post by AbsolutelyFreeWeb »

Version Standard 1.91
OS: Windows 2003 server

Yahoo often gives temporary errors. In most occasions the mail is requeued and sent again. But sometimes, the mail goes directly to the bad mail folder on first attempt, for the same yahoo mail address that usually works. Debug info below:

01/03/06 15:05:11 ME-E0038: [FE2894A704254638A432D49A44400C40.MAI] Communications Error: Socket connection to mx1.mail.yahoo.com failed (error 10060). The host was either not contactable or it rejected your connection.
01/03/06 15:05:32 ME-E0038: [FE2894A704254638A432D49A44400C40.MAI] Communications Error: Socket connection to mx2.mail.yahoo.com failed (error 10060). The host was either not contactable or it rejected your connection.
01/03/06 15:05:53 ME-E0038: [FE2894A704254638A432D49A44400C40.MAI] Communications Error: Socket connection to mx3.mail.yahoo.com failed (error 10060). The host was either not contactable or it rejected your connection.
01/03/06 15:06:05 ME-I0148: [FE2894A704254638A432D49A44400C40.MAI] DATE (DATA Termination) command failed with temporary return code.
01/03/06 15:06:05 ME-E0033: [FE2894A704254638A432D49A44400C40.MAI] DATA Transmission failed.
01/03/06 15:06:05 ME-E0059: [FE2894A704254638A432D49A44400C40.MAI] Message Delivery Failure. Attempt (0): Domain (yahoo.com) returned temporary error for email. Message has been requeued.
01/03/06 15:06:05 ME-E0xxx: [FE2894A704254638A432D49A44400C40.MAI] Delayed message from postmaster has been placed in the badmail queue.

??? for the same mail (same id) Looking in the bad mail directory it says:

Retry count: 0
Status: Sending
Priority: Normal
Created: 2006-01-03 9:04:50 PM
Next send time: 2006-01-03 9:04:50 PM

Notice that the date/time on the bad mail is wrong, when I'm writing this, the time on the server is: 2006-01-03 6:49 PM

I think this is a bug...

Hi, there is a problem with your version where this particular error being returned by yahoo was being treated with a fail please try the SMTP service at this location;

http://www.mailenable.com/hotfix/MESMTPC.zip

After a full review of sending to yahoo this was the only problem encountered any other issues not fixed by this patch, will be a result of something in this link;

Thank you for providing a patch for me.

I can't copy the patch on the existing MESMTPC.exe even though I stopped and disabled the service. any ideas?
it says: cannot copy MESMTPC: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open.

This problem with an earlier hotfix was also mentioned here:
http://forum.mailenable.com/viewtopic.p ... usermapped

Will this hotfix be available in next release?

Hi, we have only seen this issue when the event log is open while you are trying to replace the service.

If the event log is open usually a reboot before changing the service will fix this.

OK try and change the service to manual or disabled in component services and then reboot. This will ensure the service is not running and prevent anything locking it up.

I have one ME Enterprise server (1.1) running on Server 2003 with this same problem. Strangly enough you can rename the old file then copy the new file to the Bin folder. However it appears you need to reboot for the new file to start working. This is a very serious problem that I would love to resolve but so far I've tried just about everything to no avail.

thank you, that worked, but how do you see what version of smtpc is running? the mailserver does not reply with its build number in its welcome message, and there is no version command?

You can right click on the file and select |Properties|Version| but it doesn't look like the ME folks are keeping this updated :(

Also, my W3C SMTP log shows this (I'm running Enterprise 1.1):

#Software: MailEnable SMTP Server Version 1.0a
#Version: 1.0

Doesn't look to me like there is any good way to determine the version.

At present there is no real way to determine version, we can only even do here on date and size stamps. There is an auto update notification feature available soon that should have this sorted however.

I still seem to have this problem. I think it's not solved yet...

There is a new version of Standard up now, use this if you still have these in the logs then the logs events are true and reporting correctly. You may like to check your delivery delay notifications and reset the retries to something like;

1st - 5 min
2nd - 15min
30 - 30min

Dont sent delivery delay notifications until 30 mins

Experiencing same issue even after 1.72 pro upgrade

Post by srichardson »

I am also experiencing this problem with sending mail to Yahoo. I've tried all the upgrades including the latest to Professional 1.72.

I receive the same log messages as described above. Currently my work around is to enable Smart Host and to send all my email through a second windows server with an IIS SMTP service running. This seems to work well.

Are other still experiencing this issue even after the latest upgrade?

I've just upgraded to standard 1.92.

It'll show if it still exists after a while.

Thanks for the upgrade MailEnable! :) :)
