Can you forward e-mails to spam@. Forward spam as attachmnt?

Post by richtalbot »

Hi,

Two questions.

We have the Bayesian filtering set up (auto/manual train) with the spam@ being catch-all. We are still getting quite a lot of spam to our mailboxes while the dictionary is compiled.

My first question is: can we forward received spam to spam@domain.com to train the filter? My concern is, the filter will see the e-mail is coming from our own email addresses, and think we are spammers.

My second question is, when we detect spam, can we trigger an event to forward the e-mail as a text attachment to the recipient, but with a 'could be spam' subject, and body containing report as to why the filter thinks it's spam?

Thanks for you help.

Hi,
To get spam from mailboxes into the dictionary you can complete one of the three options;

1. Use web mail to use the Mark As Spam function here are some further details on this;

Here is a registry key that will control the feature for you, it allows a user to right click on a message in web mail and select "Mark As Spam" the options below help you manage what this action does for you;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mail Enable\Mail Enable\Services\WEBMAIL\Options::MessageReportAsSpam

Values follow (the default option is 1):

0. Disabled (popup menu option is not visible within webmail.
1. The message is moved to the following location (the folder is created if it does not exist): [PostofficeRoot]\MAILROOT\SPAM\Reported\[MessageID]
3. The message is copied to a SpamRoot Folder (Spam Directory registry key is read from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mail Enable\Mail Enable::Spam Directory)
4. The message is deleted

There is a new utility here that configures the registry key;

Just do not use the IP banning option. The move and the copy and to enable and disable the feature all work OK.

2. Use IMAP for some mailboxes along with public folders this way all users can move spam messages into the same public folder.

3. If you want to use pop and send the messages to a mailbox then there is somewhere in this forum a script that clears out the extra header information when a message is received into a mailbox.

Of course don’t forget you will need to start making sure that you collect ham messages as well to keep this dictionary in sync.

Ben - this is great! Now that we are in version 3.04, does the target spam folder get automatically included in a built-in bayesian training routine, or do we still have to set up a batch file to do the dirty work?

If it still requires a batch file, I'm wondering why you don't just take the extra step to make this a truly self-regulated system for the bone-headed folks like me.

If you use MEFilter as your pickup event, I have created a complete tool for people just like you and I. The only thing is that it requires you to use MEFilter to trap Spam messages and hold them.
