Greylisting - Best Practice?

Post by buono »

I upgraded to v3 Pro last week, greylisting has been fantastic for me.

My largest client (for example, ABC Company) emailed me a couple of days ago with some issues.

Some people cannot reply to email sent by this ABC Company. They can send messages to ABC Company OK, but when they are trying to reply to an email sent to them by ABC COmpany, it is not received.

Also, some of their regular clients are getting mail bounced back and the message about greylisting when they email ABC Company. These are people who have been regularly emailing ABC Company before.

It has caused me a big problem so I have disabled Greylisting in the SMTP Properties box. I don't really want to spend time looking up IP addresses of mail servers of their clients which can change at any time so they can be whitelisted.

One question is, in that Greylisting tab, if Enable Greylisting is checked, the only option in the next drop down list is "Greylisting enabled for all users", nothing else exists in that drop down.

Does this mean that I can apply Greylisting on a per Postoffice basis?

What are other people doing about people who regularly email a company suddenly getting those bounced back?

I'm not sure this has something to do with grey-listing (some of the issues might)!

I've been trying to get help with an issue I have with users on Gmail, and it sounds a bit like the first issue you mention!

When users of my mail server send mail to GMail users, the GMail users can not reply, the message just returns with a "failure, could not contact remote server" (or something like that). And only when replying!

When I search my debug smtp log, I find alot of entries with error 10060. Try that, and try looking at your logs from before your upgrade?!?!

Sorry I know this is not much help, but if you have to same problems as I have, we might be able to get MailEnable's attention :)

regards,
Steen

I think the two issues are caused by different causes.

I found out today that the user who cannot reply to emails from ABC Company has had this problem since before the upgrade.

I should also state that ABC Company and the user who cannot reply to their emails are both clients of mine and have their emails hosted on my server.

I really want to be able to apply greylisting on a per-Postoffice basis.

post the relevant parts of your smtp log files showing the emails coming and going.

if both companies are hosted by you then you should be able to do some pretty good testing yourself by setting up a mail client and pretending to be both of these companies. send some email back and forth to a test account and see what happens.

also, you should be able to see the email sent from ABC, then you should also be able to see the reply to ABC coming back in, or at least an attempt at it coming back in.

The issue you are talking about is a reply so it concerns only outbound mail which is not affected by Greylisting.

You can only configure greylisting on a per post office and mailbox levels in the Enteprise version.

What do your SMTP logs say when your customers are sending to the ABC server and it fails? What is the exact message that is being bounced to the client when it fails?
