Password Prompting Issue

Post by AmbientIT »

Hello,

I have about 35 email domains setup and most of the users from multiple domains have complained about their email clients, mostly but not exclusively Microsoft Outlook, prompting them for passwords that are correctly stored or rejecting valid passwords. The problem is worse some days than others but they will be prompted up to 10 times a day.

Is this a configuration error with Mail Enable or another server issue?

Hi,

What do you see within the MailEnable POP3 activity and debug log files at the time the problems occur?

I also encounter this similar issue randomly for our 120 emails.

But when we cancel the login prompt and send/receive again in outlook the email connection work again.

This should not be normal. Any suggestion.

Hi,
exact same problem here!
I my case, only users which receive mail from same account onto 2 computers, report this problem. Might it be related to 2 computers accessing same mailbox at the same time?

Here is extract from POP Service LOG at one of these moments:

Code: Select all

04/23/09 09:07:04	User user@domain.com tried to log in, but not a valid username/password combination
04/23/09 09:07:04	(recv) socket [684] Host 123.123.123.123 disconnected.
04/23/09 09:07:08	User user@domain.com tried to log in, but not a valid username/password combination
04/23/09 09:07:08	(recv) socket [988] Host 123.123.123.123 disconnected.
04/23/09 09:07:09	User user@domain.com tried to log in, but not a valid username/password combination
04/23/09 09:07:09	(recv) socket [620] Host 123.123.123.123 disconnected.
04/23/09 09:07:10	User user@domain.com tried to log in, but not a valid username/password combination

OUCH!!! :?
I just found out, that somebody hacked into my account and changed settings and password!

Password was set to teamgameover and friendly name to rasta. Holly molly...

After checking out other mailboxes with same problem, all hava something in common: 2nd or 3rd computer, which is retreiving mail, is either mobile cellphone, or wireless notebook, connected to some unsecured Wireless.
Which means, hackers are everywhere, so be carefull!

ADDED LATER:
Thinking of how could hacker change password and friendly name...the only way is to login to WEBMAIL.
Is there any way to track password changes through webmail? I mean, to track WHO and from WHICH IP changed WHAT.

Any idea?

We have found that this largely impacts users that have a Blackberry account POP'ing off email and also have Outlook checking frequently.

Anyone else see this issue?

Same problem here - plesk 9x for windows with mailenable, quite frequently some mailboxes keep popping up messages that password entered is wrong. As soon as we change password for mailbox it starts working but something changes somewhere. No blackberry or smartphones but still the same.

Is there any tracking of password changes in mailenable logs anywhere? I haven't been able to find it so far.
