Could not resolve DSN (1460)

Postby [Angel] » Wed Nov 28, 2007 3:37 am

I will try not to give useless info, but I am a super newbie (4 days of learning how to set up a home webserve and mail server).

I am running on Windows XP home/Apache. I can not send or receive mail. When I run the diagnostic I get "Could not resolve DSN". My DSN is step up with ZoneEdit and I am pretty sure (I'm not committing) it is set up correctly. The mailserver looks like it is working, except for this error.

I ran the remote server diagnostic and got the following:

Test Result
Domain Name: PASS, tccplayground.com
Servers hosting DNS Records: PASS, Name Servers are: ns9.zoneedit.com,ns7.zoneedit.com
A Record Resolution (mail.tccplayground.com) PASS,
PTR Record Resolution (mail.tccplayground.com) PASS, PTR=
Server Responding (mail.tccplayground.com) WARN, . This server is not identifiable as a MailEnable Server.
Server Relay Test (mail.tccplayground.com) - Please see Article ME020001.

I figured it must be my router so I made sure to forward 110 and 25 but that did not seem to do it. I disabled all firewalls…still nothing. I made sure that DSN setting under SMTP was correct. I have tried different mail servers. Each with the same result.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Well I ran off and did not check it properly. I can receive mail but can not send and I am still getting the same DNS error.

Based on your first link I conducted this test, here is what I got.

D:\>nslookup
Default Server: mygateway1.Motorola
Address: 192.168.15.1

> 206.255.43.152
Server: mygateway1.Motorola
Address: 192.168.15.1

Name: h152.43.255.206.cable.lngv.cablelynx.com
Address: 206.255.43.152

> set type=MX
>

I did not get a failure so I am off to link 2.

D:\>ipconfig /all

I would think my problem is that my DNS Servers is 192.168.15.1 which is local. But I have to admit I have no idea how to change that.

Hi,

Aslong as your local DNS server is able to resolve external domains then you should not have problems using a local DNS address. If the local DNS server is experiencing difficulties resolving then you may need to use an alternative DNS server address. EG: your ISP's

You can check if DNS server is able to resolve external domains by using the NSlookup command. EG:

C:\Documents and Settings\ian.MAILENABLE>nslookup
Default Server: mec3.mailenable.com.au
Address: 192.168.2.100

> mailenable.com
Server: mec3.mailenable.com.au
Address: 192.168.2.100

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: mailenable.com
Addresses: 209.213.99.114, 209.213.99.115

When you use the nslookup command, specify "mailenable.com" as the domain you would like to resolve. If the tests timeout and does not return the same IP's in my example then this indicates that your DNS server is not functioning correctly.

Well it looks like it worked correctly. here is what I got:

D:\>nslookup
Default Server: mygateway1.Motorola
Address: 192.168.15.1

> mailenable.com
Server: mygateway1.Motorola
Address: 192.168.15.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: mailenable.com
Addresses: 209.213.99.114, 209.213.99.115

I sure appreciate your help. If nothing else I am learning a lot of good test. Everything appears to be operating properly; do you have anything else I might try? :)

Hi,

Ok, well I was able to telnet to your server and send a test message to the postmaster account under the postoffice "tccplayground.com". So no problems contacting the sever and receiving messages.

Are you able to telnet to "mail.mailenable.com" on port 25 or port 110 and establish a connection? EG:

C:\Documents and Settings\ian.MAILENABLE>telnet mail.mailenable.com 25

It appears so.

On 110 I connect and got to here:

+OK POP3 dcsecommerce.dsvr.co.uk v2003.83 server ready

On 25 I connect and got to here:

220 mailenable.com ESMTP MailEnable Service, Version: 0--3.05 ready at 11/28/07
21:01:27

Hi,

Well you should not have any problems sending receiving now. If you see the errors within the diagnostic report, then ensure to refresh (F5 key) the report as sometimes it can cache old records.

My IP address does not change but it is forwarded to my local ip 192.168.15.4 shows to be dynamic. Is there a way to see my IP the way other mail server will see it?

Thanks for all your help.

Do you retain the same IP after powering off your cable modem for an hour or more? If not, then it's back to the last quoted thread as you may also be violating your ISP's AUP too.
