SUMMARY
This article outlines the different modes for the MailEnable VRFY command.
DETAIL
MailEnable's VRFY command has two modes of operation. These are outlined below.
The value is controlled by this
key:
Root: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mail Enable\Mail
Enable\CONNECTORS\SMTP
Value Name: "Use Directory for VRFY"
Type:
DWORD
Values: (follow)
0. Address Map resolution mode (default
configuration)
In this case the VRFY query string is validated against
all the addresses
served by MailEnable. (ie: the addresses in the
address-map.tab file).
If a match is found then a 250 response is returned containing the original query string.
As such, whatever you ask for will be validated
and will be returned in the string response.
In the case where the supplied e-mail address matches the
query string, the VRFY query string will
be returned in the following format:
250
<EMailAddress>
1. The
VRFY query string is validated against the published contents of the MailEnable directory (Directory.tab
file).
In this case where the directory provider is used (ie: this
case) then the display name is used as the key for resolution. In the case where
the display name matches the query string, the VRFY query string will be
returned in the following format:
250 DisplayName
<EMailAddress>
