How to configure the Conversations XMPP/Jabber client with MailEnable

Conversations is an XMPP client for Android 4.4+. It provides an extensive array of security/privacy features and mobile/performance optimisations and supports end-to-end encryption mechanisms.

It is recommended that you have created an appropriate SRV record for your domain that allows XMPP clients to locate the XMPP server for your domain.

Without an SRV records, the account creation process will use the domain portion of your XMPP/Jabber ID to locate the server.

Those wishing to use Conversations should ensure that their MailEnable Server version is 10.15 or later.

MailEnable should be configured to advertise the following XMPP features to provide optimal integration with clients (like Conversations):

  • XEP-0280: Allows clients to synchronize coversations at other locations
  • XEP-0202: Allow entities to query time information
  • XEP-0352: Allow Client State Indication (CSI)
  • XEP-0313: Allow clients to access chat history/archive (MAM)
  • XEP-0198: Enable enhanced connection/stream management

To configure Conversations, please follow these steps:

  1. Install Conversations on your device (it can be downloaded from Google Play Store).
  2. Open the application and launch the "Add Account" procedure.
  3. Enter your existing MailEnable email address as your Jabber ID.
