Apple IMAP client keeps trying to download a message part that does not exist

SYMPTOMS

In the IMAP Activity logs there are many requests for a part of an email message, but the server is not able to return anything. The log extract will contain something like the following, but with many lines the same:

UID FETCH 1 BODY.PEEK[1]<35717.2045>  * 1 FETCH (UID 1 BODY[1]<35717> {0}

But the message content size is only 35717, and the client is requesting another 2045.

CAUSE

This caused by the email client getting the size of the contents from within the message itself. In the example above, this particular message has as a header item:

X-Apple-Content-Length: 37762

But this has the incorrect size.

RESOLUTION

The user should see if they can upgrade their email client. Otherwise deleting the email or editing it to remove the incorrect header will resolve it, but just for that email message.
